Just a few kilometres from the harbour of Methoni, in the open waters of the Ionian Sea, lies one of Greece's most impressive yet least known destinations: Sapientza. A lush, almost uninhabited island with crystal-clear waters, deserted beaches and an atmosphere unlike anywhere else.
The best — and practically only — way to discover it is by renting a boat in Methoni.
What is Sapientza?
Sapientza belongs to the Messinian Oinousses, an island cluster that also includes Schiza, Venetiko and Mariani. The entire cluster is part of the Natura 2000network, as a nature and biodiversity protection area.
The name “Sapientza” is of Italian — Venetian — origin and means wisdom. And indeed, the island has a timeless, serene quality: more than 120 animal species live freely here, including the famous Cretan wild goat, the kri-kri.
Southwest of the island lies the Oinousses Deep — the deepest point in the entire Mediterranean, at a depth of 5,121 metres.
The beaches worth visiting
Ammos Beach
Sapientza's most famous beach. Located on the northern side of the island, right across from Methoni, it can be reached only by sea. Fine sand, turquoise waters and very few people — especially outside August.
Spartolakka
More remote and wild. Ideal if you want complete peace and quiet. Accessible from the eastern side of the island.
Hidden coves
Along Sapientza's rocky coastline there are several small coves that don't even have a name — discover them with your boat.
The Sapientza lighthouse
The southern tip of the island is dominated by the historic Sapientza lighthouse, built in 1895. It is one of the area's most impressive landmarks and is clearly visible from the boat as you sail around the island.
